Frank Dougherty is an Ojibwe-lineage researcher from Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula — Sugar Island. He spent years tracing his own family, learning the hard way which records matter and where the dead ends hide.

Frank, a registered member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians with a 50% blood quantum, traces his ancestry through his father. Regarding his maternal lineage, his mother is white with family roots in upstate New York, which includes a small portion of unrecognized Mohawk heritage.

He wrote this workbook to hand you the map he wishes he'd had when he started: the steps, the records, the scripts, and honest expectations.

"Document everything. Don't go by hearsay. Take your time, honor the ancestors by getting the facts right, and enjoy the journey."
